Hi there ! No worries, we don't eat newbies. We do devour other things, including any WW2-related book or movie we get our hands on, but you oughtta be quite safe. So, another devoted fan of Rommel ? When did you hear about him ? Do you study history or something like that ? We're all more or less history freaks, I'm afraid Where are you from, by the way ?

Hullo! It's nice to see another newbie here (we can be in awe of the great alter of history together ;D) and if that isn't quite your cup of tea, it's always a pleasure to meet new people!
On a bit of a side note, I saw a wonderful movie recently about WWI called Joyeux Noël. I highly recommend it (even if it *is* about WWI). Hmm, although, Qual, have you already seen it, it is French after all...

Oh, yeah, I've seen it a few months ago actually. I thought it was great that the Germans spoke German, the French spoke French and the Brits spoke English, for a change. And it was a very beautiful movie, too. Definitely a must. The end was kinda sad, though (but I'm not gonna say more to avoid spoilers). The funny/sad thing was the cat being shot for collaborating, eh.

I haven't seen Joyeux Noel yet although I've been meaning to for awhile, it looks like quite a facinating film. Everyone thinks I'm weird because I like war movies like Das Boot and Saving Private Ryan, but meh, what do they know? As for Rommel I first learned about him at the tender age of five when my dad, a social studies teacher, watched a documentary with me about the 1940 German attack on France. Not really having any concept of who the Nazis were at the time, I was totally facinated by Rommel and my dad gave me a somewhat edited version of the Desert Fox's career as a bedtime story. The rest, as they say, is history. My boyfriend likes to tease me by saying I have a crush on Rommel. I usually smack him at that point. ;D I live in Canada, western Canada to be exact, in the province of British-Columbia and before you ask, no we don't say 'eh' every second word. Or take dogsleds to work. Really, where do people come up with this stuff? I'm in university and working towards getting my Bachelor of Natural Resource Science degree. As a result I'm something of a plant geek and I love to garden too. I'm also a big fan of J R R Tolkien, Garth Nix, Anne McCaffrey and various other scifi and fantasy authors.

Well, I'm lucky enough to have a family who, if not crazy about Rommel, at least like war movies well enough (pretty much everyone else think I'm a freak). I've got the beginnings of a vast war movies and series collection Did you watch 'Allo 'Allo and Hogan's Heroes ? Which are your three favourite war movies ? I'm always eager to discover new stuff ! Joyeux Noel sure is good stuff, without stereotypes. For once the French don't wear berets and don't have a stick of French bread in their hands, and the Germans are pretty decent guys. Rommel bedtime stories ! Now that must have been something ! If I've got kids someday, I'll try that My own obsession began when we studied nazism in depth for several months. Actually, the teacher hardly even mentioned Rommel once, but I found out about him and I though he was a fascinating fellow. Hehe, you should tell your boyfriend that you do have a crush on Rommel and make him jealous. Bet he'd stop teasing you after that ! Don't worry, no stereotypes around here. (If there were, I'd be the one at a disadvantage...) We won't say a word about dogselds, caribous, wolves or mounties That's funny though, you know, because I was recently watching the "Due South" series, out of curiosity Hey, you study Natural Resource Science ? Say, do you study also corporate social responsibility ? Just asking, because I must write a memoir this year, and the subject I chose is linked to that. I've never read Garth Nix, but I have read Tolkien and McCaffrey. A few other authors I like are Robin Hobb, David Weber, Naomi Novik, Fiona McIntosh. Did you read them ? And do you write fanfics or novels or poetry - or anything else ? Or perhaps you draw ? You might have seen already that a few of us gave a try at Rommel fanart/fanfiction (but please don't dwell on my own pathetic efforts - I'm sufficiently ashamed of it as it is). If you write/draw, I think we'd all be curious to take a look.

We don't get either Hogan's Heroes or 'Allo 'Allo on tv here unfortunatly but I am familiar with them, though you probably wouldn't be able to get me to recall anything about individual episodes. War movies? Probably Das Boot, Saving Private Ryans, and Apocalypse Now. I don't think we study corporate responsability in our degree program. Probably the closest we get is a class on the economics of forestry and a class on conflict resolution. Garth Nix is an Australian author who writes dark fantasy, necromancy and stuff, here's a link to the first book in the Old Kingdom series on Amazon if you're interested. www.amazon.com/Sabriel-adult-Abhorsen-Trilogy-Garth/dp/0060575816/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202060539&sr=1-10I've read the Temerraire series and I'm absolutely in love with it. I heard Peter Jackson got the movies right for the books so there may even be a Temereaire movie sometime in the future. *bounces up and down in excitement* Robin Hobb is an author on my 'to read' list thought I haven't heard of Fiona Macintosh, what sort of stuff does she write? In terms of fanfiction I've written a few things but nothing that's ended up on the Internet as of yet. I think I'm paranoid of ending up on this site: www.godawful.net/ I'm afraid I don't draw, unless you like deformed-looking stick people. I do have a DeviantArt account, but that's mostly for storing favorite pictures. ;D

I honestly can't remember if that was the documentary in question or not. It was so long ago I've forgotten most of the details apart from the fact that it was in France and Rommel was in it. ;D BTW if anyone wants to chat in real time my MSN is blackphoenix16@hotmail.com and on AIM my screen name is AzuraRaven.
