I like the timeline given very much, but a duel? We can't kill off Hans or Fritz. Maybe a fistfight in Rommie's scenario, out lost in the middle of the desert. Two black eyes would be fun to explain to Rommel; I can imagine that scene.
Speidel starting the story sounds good, and I love the idea of a neutral von Luck.

Well, when I said a duel, I didn't mean either of them would die. They'd be discovered by another character, probably Hans or your newsman - Ludwig, right ? - and they'd get an earful from Rommel... Then again, it was just a random idea. I'm probably watching too many pirate movies A fistfight is such a GREAT idea !

True, coming close to a duel would be great fun, but did the German army have the duel-mentality in those days? A fistfight would be fun too, hm...I guess we'll have to see where it goes. What should the title of our round robin be? Disorder in the Ranks? Coming and Going? Throw some ideas out there, folks.

Pfft. Hans would never lower himself to a fistfight. Far too crude. This is coming from the guy who listens to Wagnerian opera and loves French literature. Battle of Wits, yaaa!
Maybe BAYERLEIN would. *sticks tongue out at Fritzi*
So, I'm supposed to start this? Will think of a presentable title.

Hm... On September 1, 1940, Bayerlein was made an Oberstleutnant On April 1, 1942, he was promoted to Oberst. So that means, some where in our story, he does something good enough that Rommel promotes him. hehe, score one for Fritz. Also, in the ongoing story, historically, is Hans Speidel a general yet in 1942? Especially a lieutenant general? I did some research, and by 1943, he was only a Major General. He started as a Lieutenant colonel in the beginning of World War II, so I would guess in our story he's a oberstleutnant, like Bayerlein, or at the most an oberst. So poor Hans won't want to get his hands dirty, eh? Welcome to the desert heat.

The desert can do things to a person's mind. A fistfight may seem out of character for Hans, but if you put him in the scorching heat with no water and in the company of a rival you do have a receipe for a mental breakdown. Hans may not start the fight, in fact he may instigate it and Fritz is the one who throws the first punch.
As for ranks, since this is already an AH (Alternate History), we can always tweak the timeline to suit our needs.

I agree, if they're lost in the desert without water and with only each other for all company... they can start blaming each other for their plight, and in such a situation...

I'll have a post for Erwin tomorrow afternoon. I need to brush up on my Afrika Korps and Operation Crusader.
*looks for that book on the African campaign*

Ive read up on January of 42, Rommel is not a Field Marshal at that time and Tobruk has yet to fall. In fact, Rommel has been retreating since late of 41. January 21st he'll have stopped the British dead in its tracks and made Operation Crusader a sham. A few months later Tobruk falls and Rommel presses forward toward Alexandria.
At this time Rommel is a Colonel-General.
So... what date is this really set?

Well, I suggest we just change his rank to colonel-general, and keep going. Unless you'd rather we set this after he was promoted to field marshall ?

Changing it to colonel general sounds good. I'll change my bit, but in that case, should Bayerlein and Speidel go back to being historically correct oberstleutnants, at least in Bayerlein's case? Then he could get promoted in our story in April, and sparks could fly.

Then oberstleutnants they are, as soon as I can change my post.

I dont know much about Hans Speidel other than that he was Rommel's CoS and a conspirator. Heck I dont even know what he looks like! I know I can Wiki him however wiki doesnt tell you a man's habits. Does Spiedel excercise? Smoke? Well-kempt? Die his hair? What are his tastes (aside form opera) and habits, both good and bad?
