It's been a while, guys, and I won't start making excuses, like telling you I have been awfully busy, or that I had very bad connections in New Caledonia, or that I've been focusing on other things. No, I won't do that. What I will do, on the other hand, is tell you about what I did this morning.
School is starting again, the sky is grey, leaves are falling, the autumn comes near... and I just watched a WW2 movie called "L'évadé Du Camp 1", or, in good English, "The One That Got Away".
First, the cast. The main character, Franz von Werra, is played by Hardy Krüger. If you've seen "A Taxi to Tobruk" that name should ring a bell. You know, that guy of average height, fair hair, blue eyes, dashing and charming, physical stereotype of the good Aryan ? Yeah, that's him. Since there are no major characters apart from him, we'll stop here for the cast.
Now, the story. As we are informed at the very beginning of the movie, it is based on the true story of the German officer Franz von Werra, the only one to escape after being captured by the British. Arrested in 1940 after an emergency landing, he is interrogated, but gives nothing away. He even bets with his interrogator that he will manage to escape - within six months.
What made me really like the movie, beyond the story, is that it was very refreshing, with a very British good-naturedness. Von Werra's determination is impressive, and the German prisoners stick together no matter what. They pull off daring escapes, even though they are seldom successful, and keep their spirits up (which in 1940 is totally understandable...)
It's not a biased movie. Well - okay, nothing is ever totally unbiased, but there is no "bad German vs. good Allies" morale. And, frankly, that's a nice change. Seriously, if you can find it, no hesitations to have !
